Long sandy beach near Rethymno
How this list was selected Compiled from local knowledge, visitor feedback and Crete Guide editorial research.

Rethymno sits on the north coast with a long sandy beach running east from the harbour. The south coast, an hour away by car over the White Mountains, offers a very different coastline — quieter, less developed, and often dramatic.

Rethymno city beach

The beach runs for several kilometres east of the old town. The western end, near the harbour, is the most pleasant — the old town acts as a backdrop and the water is calm. The further east you go, the more resort-dominated it becomes.
