Stays

Where to stay in Crete — curated accommodation across all regions.

Choosing where to stay in Crete shapes the experience of the island more than on most Greek destinations. Each region has a distinct character, and distances are longer than they look on a map — driving from Chania to Sitia takes around three and a half hours, so picking the right base matters.

Chania's old town is the most atmospheric base for exploring western Crete, with boutique hotels in restored Venetian buildings and immediate access to one of the island's best-preserved historic centres. The wider Chania region has the largest selection of private villas for families or groups, particularly in the coastal areas around Platanias and Gerani, and along the quieter south coast near Sfakia and Frangokastello.

Heraklion is the main transport hub — best suited to those arriving by ferry, visiting Knossos, or using the island's capital as a base for the wine country and central highlands. Rethymno offers a Venetian old town and a wide sandy beach within walking distance of each other, and works well as a central base. The Elounda area in eastern Crete has the island's highest concentration of luxury resort hotels, set on the calm Mirabello Gulf.
