Planning Your Visit
Heraklion is not primarily a beach city, but there are good options within easy reach, from the organised beaches immediately east of the city to quieter coves further along the coast.
Amoudara
The closest beach to Heraklion, about 5 km west of the city. Long and sandy with full facilities — sunbeds, showers, tavernas. Popular with locals and easily reached by city bus. Good option for a quick swim without leaving the city orbit.
Karteros & Kokkini Hani
A string of small sandy beaches east of the airport, popular with city residents. Kokkini Hani has a small village with tavernas behind the beach. Accessible by city bus — good for those without a car staying in Heraklion.
Hersonissos
About 25 km east of Heraklion, one of the more developed resort areas in Crete. Wide, organised beaches with full facilities. Better suited to those staying in the resort strip than as a day trip — the town itself is geared heavily toward mass tourism.
Malia Beach
East of Hersonissos, longer and slightly quieter toward the ends of the strip. The town is better known for nightlife than beach quality, but the beach itself is wide and sandy.
Matala
A south coast beach about 70 km from Heraklion, known for the ancient cave dwellings carved into the cliffs at one end. The main beach is sandy and sheltered; Red Beach (a 20-minute walk) is quieter and clothes-optional. The village has a relaxed, slightly bohemian character.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the closest beach to Heraklion city centre?
Amoudara is the closest, about 5 km west of the centre and reachable by city bus. For something east of the city, Karteros and Kokkini Hani are also accessible without a car.
Do I need a car to visit beaches near Heraklion?
Not for Amoudara or the beaches east of the airport — both are on city bus routes. For Matala and south coast beaches you will need a car, as public transport connections are limited.
When is the best time to visit beaches near Heraklion?
Late May to early October is the main beach season. July and August are the busiest months; June and September offer a good balance of warm weather and fewer crowds.
Is Matala worth a day trip from Heraklion?
Yes, though it is about 70 km away — allow at least 90 minutes each way. The combination of the beach, the ancient cave dwellings, and the village atmosphere makes it a worthwhile excursion, especially outside peak season.
