Beaches

The best beaches in Crete, from famous lagoons to hidden coves.

Crete has more than 1,000 kilometres of coastline, and the quality and variety of its beaches is one of the island's defining features. From the famous pink sands of Elafonissi and the lagoon at Balos in the far west, to the wild coves of the south coast and the organised family beaches of the north, there is a beach to suit every preference and level of effort.

The north coast beaches are generally calmer and more developed — easier to reach by road, with sunbeds, tavernas and facilities. The south coast tends to be wilder and less crowded, accessed by longer drives or boat. The beaches around Sfakia, Frangokastello and Matala offer some of the most unspoilt swimming on the island, with fewer visitors even in July and August.

Water quality across Crete is generally excellent, with clear, clean water and many beaches holding Blue Flag certification. The sea reaches comfortable swimming temperature by May and stays warm well into October, with the south coast typically warmer than the north.
