Planning Your Visit

Most Cretan beaches are at their best from late May to early October. For fewer crowds, visit early in the morning or in shoulder season (May–June, September). South coast beaches are generally quieter than those in the northwest.

Rethymno sits on the north coast with a long sandy beach running east from the harbour. The south coast, an hour away by car over the White Mountains, offers a very different coastline — quieter, less developed, and often dramatic. For a broader overview of the island’s coastline, see our guide to the best beaches in Crete.

Rethymno city beach

The beach runs for several kilometres east of the old town. The western end, near the harbour, is the most pleasant — the old town acts as a backdrop and the water is calm. The further east you go, the more resort-dominated it becomes.
