Nightlife
Where to go after dark — bars, clubs and the Cretan night scene.
Cretan nightlife operates on its own timetable. Bars begin filling around midnight, and clubs rarely reach capacity before 2am. In resort areas, this rhythm runs from June through September. Outside peak season, nightlife concentrates in the old towns of Heraklion and Chania, which maintain a year-round bar culture.
Chania's old town — particularly around the Venetian Harbour and the streets behind it — has the best concentration of bars for an evening out. The atmosphere is relaxed and social rather than hedonistic: most bars play a mix of traditional Cretan music and contemporary sounds, and the outdoor seating along the waterfront fills from early evening. The area around Sarpidona and the streets behind the lighthouse are reliably lively in summer.
Heraklion's nightlife centres around the streets near Lions Square (Plateia Eleftherias) and extends down towards the waterfront. There are dedicated club zones on the outskirts of the city — Heraklion has a bigger club scene than Chania, better suited to those looking for a more conventional nightclub experience. Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos have smaller but active bar scenes in summer, concentrated around their respective Venetian harbours.
